Western Sport Shop
has been northern California's complete resource for hunting, fishing and flyfishing since 1947. That year, a young man named Gene Thompson opened a small shop in San Rafael dedicated to the lifestyle he loved. He took the time to teach newcomers, had an vast amount of knowledge gained from years of experience in the field, and always had time to enjoy a customer's tale. It was the right combination, and the store continued to expand until it outgrew its walls, moving down the street to its current location in 1964.

Tuna Haul '50's Our philosophy remains the same today. Our commitment to service has not wavered in over 50 years. We've continued to broaden our product lines and we strive to have the best quality items for hunting, fishing or flyfishing. Whether you are looking for an inexpensive rod & reel for local trout fishing or seeking handcrafted equipment for a once-in-a-lifetime trip, chances are we've got the right stuff in stock. In case your needs dictate something we don't have, special orders are no problem.

Curly and Gene There aren't a lot of stores like Western Sport Shop around anymore. In these days of mega-malls and cookie-cutter stores, it takes too much effort to find staff members with a deep love and knowledge of the outdoors. It would be much simpler to stock only a narrow set of "best sellers", like a chain store does. But, we feel that it's more important to have the right equipment and advice for each customer's needs, rather than try a one-size-fits-all approach. We are committed to that effort, and, of course, we still have time to listen to a good tale.

This 5,000 square foot building has been a landmark in San Rafael as long as anyone can remember. Easily accessible from Highway 101, it is on the direct path to the Marin County watershed lakes. Extended hours make it easy to drop in for that one last thing you need. The San Rafael store also houses northern California's largest hunting, fishing, fly fishing and book department, including an extensive array of rare and collectable editions. Directions:
From US 101, take the Central San Rafael exit. Head west on Third Street (it's one way). The store is a stand-alone building on the north side of the street, just beyond Lindaro. We are surrounded by metered parking.

Opened in the fall of 2000, this location is the expansion of the venerable Western Angler Fly Shop. Adding the hunting and fishing departments from the original Western Sport Shop, this 3,500 square foot store has already become the most popular hunting, fishing & fly fishing shop in Sonoma county. From US 101, take the Yolanda exit. Head south on Santa Rosa Avenue. The store is located in the first shopping center on the south corner of Burt. Free parking is available.
