Fly Fishing Department

Nothing seems to compliment the serene beauty of a stream better than the smooth cast of a fly rod, with its arc of the line through the air and perfect presentation of the fly before the foe. From the delicate leader to the simple reel, fly fishing is the most direct contact you can have with a fish. It can also be one of the most challenging, and almost everyone we know who has tried it has gotten hooked.

When we began selling fly fishing gear, it was a fairly esoteric pursuit of a few die-hards on California's unspoiled waters. Of course, interest in the sport has grown quite a bit in recent years, and our broad selection and service have kept pace. We've worked hard over the years to demystify this challenging approach to fishing through classes, clinics, seminars, demonstrations and our annual Fly Fishing Fair each spring.

Western Sport Shop was one of the original Sage Fly Rod dealers, among the first Cortland Pro Shops on the west coast, and has become a Scientific Angler Mastery Dealer. Our fly fishing department has become larger than most stand-alone fly shops, and offers a premium selection of quality fly rods, fly reels, fly patterns, gear and tying materials. Our staff is in constant contact with guides and other anglers, and will be more than happy to recommend fly patterns and techniques for your next outing, from surf to stream. Click here for more about what we stock at our stores.

One of the things we've learned over the years is that you never stop learning. We have a regular schedule of beginning and advanced fly tying and casting classes. Click here for a current schedule of classes.

Fly Tying Equipment and Materials

There's nothing like the thrill of catching a fish on a fly you've tied yourself. Western Sport Shop brings together the resources you need to create effective patterns for your quarry. Between our regularly scheduled fly tying classes, celebrity tyers showing specialized patterns at our annual Fly Fishing Fair, and the breadth of our tools, materials and hook selection, we strive to bring you the highest level instruction and equipment.

Start by choosing the best necks and hackle from Hoffman, Metz, J. Fair and Whiting Farms, add to that a breadth of dubbing, poly & synthetics fabrics, chenilles, feathers and more. Then, scan our broad choice of hooks from Tiemco, Mustad and Eagle Claw, plus specialty hooks geared to specific patternsi. If you need eyes, beads, lead, cork, foam or just about anything else, it's probably hanging in our Fly Tying Department. If it isn't, and we can get it, we'd be happy to special order anything that your needs demand.

Whether you need a rock-solid tying vise by Dyna-King, or just finally wore out your hackle pliers, our tool selection has you covered.

We also have northern California's largest selection of Fly Tying literature and books. Many of the titles are available for online purchase.

Fly Line & Rod Weight Ratings

This chart shows the recommended line weight ratings for AFTMA (American Fishing Tackle Manfuacturing Associaton) guidelines. The lower portion of this chart gives a guideline for "Shooting Head" systems, and what weight heads can be used to properly load a fly rod.

Rod Rating Weight in Grains Rod Rating Weight in Grains
#1 60 #9 240
#2 80 #10 290
#3 100 #11 330
#4 120 #12 380
#5 140 #13 440
#6 160 #14 500
#7 185 #15 550
#8 210
Shooting Heads
Head Grain Weight Estimated Fly Rod Rating
150 Grains 6, 7 Weight
200 Grains 7, 8 Weight
300 Grains 8, 9 Weight
400 Grains 10, 11 Weight
500 Grains 11, 12 Weight
600 Grains 12, 13 Weight
Note -
Different rods may vary from this rough guide. If in doubt, leave it long and test-cast to find the weight which gives you the desired action for your specific situation and casting style. We cannot accept for returns any line which has been cut! Most newer, fast action rods can be "overlined" slightly.
