Fishing Department

Anyone who has ever chased any type of fish knows there's more to it than simply dropping a hook into the water. At Western Sport Shop, we've gained our knowledge from years of fishing lakes, rivers, bays and oceans. Some of us specialize in stalking easily spooked bass; spend our time bobbing with the swells for salmon; working the surf for perch or stripers; or enjoy taking the kids for a day up at the local lakes. It doesn't matter how you define it, our job is to make sure you have a great day fishing!

Our first priority is to make sure you are set up correctly. The Western Sport Shop tackle department has a wide selection of rods, reels, lures and tackle for your needs and budget. If it swims, we probably know the gear requirements and best approach - there's no point wasting valuable fishing time using rigs that don't work right.

Whether you just need hooks or deserve a finely balanced outfit for your next trip, we will take the time to make sure you are prepared correctly.

California State fishing licenses are required for all fishing, and are available for sale at both stores.

What we Stock - Fishing Department

You really have to see our stores to believe the broad selection we maintain. We learned a long time ago that not everyone wants exactly the same gear for the same pursuit. Our commitment is to stock those items which serve the needs of our customers. Over countless seasons afield, customers and employees have used the gear we stock and reported back on how well they have withstood the challenges of real-world use. (If you have some experiences to report, email us at feedback@westernsportshop.com ). Based on that track record, we decide what stays in the store. When you've invested some serious time to find that perfect fishing spot, you need equipment that works. Your question should only be, "what do I want to catch?"

The first connection is always the rod - and there are as many makes, models and designs as you can imagine, limited only by your budget and needs. We stock a wide selection of Sage, Rogue, G. Loomis, St Croix, Shimano, Daiwa, Shakespeare, and Lamiglass fishing rods for both fresh and saltwater, plus Cal-Star and Seeker rods for the varied West Coast saltwater fisheries.

To complete your perfect outfit, choose from Avet and Accurater custom reels, as well as reels from Shimano, classic designs from Penn, plus Daiwa, Abu and more.

IWe also offer a wide variety of pre-balanced rod/reel combos, which we stock from Daiwa, Okuma and Shimano.

As you work through our tackle selection, you will find many departments within our fishing department - bass, trout, salmon, cod, striper, sturgeon and the hard-fighting fish of Baja all have dedicated selections of the right lures & baits. Of course, if you get lost, just let us know, we'll be glad to explain any steps you don't understand, from the right leader for PowerBait to the correct lures for sailfish. Here are a few of the highlights:

TROUT:
Every color of PowerBait we could find, plus all kinds of scents, weights, salmon eggs, hooks and lures. Ultralight spoons, spinners, and trolling gear. Sizes that will cover the tiniest stocked trout to the largest lunkers you can dredge up.

BASS:
Wide selection of plastics with custom pours, hooks, brass weights, glass beads, poppers, tournament-grade crankbaits for virtually every depth, spinnerbaits, and other lures for any time of year. We are always on the lookout for what works for your situation, whether you are prowling local ponds, or fishing tournaments throughout the state.

SALMON:
Every color of Rotary Salmon Killer we can get our hands on. Flashers so effective you may not want to start with them on. Apex lures and other proven attractors. Of course a good selection of big nets to get 'em into the boat.

SALTWATER:
Wiggling Sumo lures & split tails for the bottom fishing, lead heads in all weights and shapes, plastics, sturgeon leaders and more.

BAJA/LONG RANGE:
Yozuri, Boone and Rapala plugs and lures. Anchovie rigs, and all the heavy duty hardware you want to depend upon when the bite is hot!

Plus, we have fresh and frozen baits, bulk fishing line wound onto your reel while you wait, or spools to take with you, and all of the bulk sinkers, leaders, floats and hooks you might care to carry with you. If you can't find what you need in all of that, special orders are not a problem.
